California Woman Denied Manicure Because Of Lupus Scars

A California woman was left in tears after her she was denied a manicure by a worker at Happy Nails salon in Laguna Niguel because of her lupus scars. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body's immune system to attack a person's body parts including their skin, blood cells, kidneys, and lungs.

Jeniffer Dreyer Brown shared her story in an emotional video on Facebook

“People judge me because I have lupus and my skin is broken out. I’ve never felt more like a leper or more judged in Orange County," Brown said while fighting back tears.

She explained that she has been living with lupus for 15 years and that hot, sunny weather can cause her condition to flare up. It was one of the hottest days of the year, with the temperature soaring above 100 degrees, when she went in to get her nails done. The manicurist told her that she could not give her a manicure because of her skin condition.

Brown said that she tried to explain that her condition was not contagious, pointing out that she was never denied service before when her scars were covered, but the employee still refused.

Scott Wellman, the attorney for Happy Nails, told Fox 11 that the employees “were just trying to follow the rules” pointing out that "the law is clear that if a customer shows up with either infection or sores or abrasions or discoloration on their arms or hands or skin, then the law mandates that the manicurist cannot do a service." He added that the employees likely did not know that lupus is not contagious.
