Why was the aftermath of the French Revolution so different than our own?

At the end our Revolutionary War, the British and their loyalists went home and the former colonists began building our nation in relative peace. The subsequent revolution in France ended in a bloodbath called the Reign of Terror. One man in each fledgling nation determined the fate of its people.
