A Massachusetts State trooper got quite a start Monday night while sitting in his marked sport utility cruiser, in position to protect a maintenance crew performing light pole inspections on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brighton.

At shortly before 10:30 p.m., Trooper Mark Lombardi's cruiser was struck from behind by a suspected drunk driver, whose vehicle rolled over onto its side soon after impact with the cruiser. Lombardi called the Weston barracks to report the accident and request emergency medical services. Lombardi was taken to the Boston Medical Center and released; state police did not provide information on whether the driver sustained injuries.
